For the past seven years, I have dedicated my life, in terms of academics and professional experiences, to studying clinical acumen. Being born into a family that has always encouraged utilizing to the fullest extent our inherent gifts, I have excelled in every academic venture I have undertaken. During my undergraduate years, I garnered many accolades, including graduating Cum Laude, Chemistry Honors List, Dean's Honor List, and receiving a Michigan Competitive Scholarship.
No effective medical professional is simply born, and owes much to their humble beginnings. During medical school, I completed an Observership with Dr. XXXX of the Psychiatric Ward of XXXX Hospital, as well as worked as a Research Assistant for Dr. XXXX, of the Pediatric Surgery Department. Research work has taught me that research intrinsically requires many hours of hard work, focused attention, and meticulous attention to detail.
Through these experiences and my rotations in medical school, being involved with general and regional anesthesia in the settings of pain management, and critical care - many aspects of peri-operative anesthesia consultation work - I have found that my passion is with clinical pharmacology and challenges in which a life hangs in the balance. I get tremendous satisfaction from tipping the scales in favor of the patient in these delicate situations, using my skills, education, and passion for teamwork to save a life. Coupled with this is my desire to make my patients as comfortable as possible, if not ultimately bring about the cessation of pain, to be the facilitator of easing a patient's life. Working alongside Anesthesiologists over the past few years has only increased my respect for the complexity of care required in the peri-operative patient. And yet the talented and compassionate Anesthesiologists can guide, comfort, and instill confidence in their patients when they need it most.
I have a high level of cultural competency and speak four languages competently English, Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi. Being born and raised in the US has given me one view of the world, while my Pakistani heritage has developed my awareness and knowledge of differing cultures, and practices. My skills are not only medical but cross-cultural. Through my international experiences, and travels to different countries, both in the developed world and developing world, I have a solid foundation with which to work from as I serve diverse patients and work with other medical professionals of differing backgrounds, interacting as effectively as possible.
A residency assignment in Anesthesiology will qualify me for examination by the ABA. Through my residency, I will have access to opportunities to spend considerable time with ICU patients, and develop my critical care or cardiothoracic anesthesia repartee through a possible fellowship. I need to fulfill my appetite for advanced intellectual challenges and desire to aid patients in their path to recovery, an approach that is as pain-free as possible. If one takes care of each tree, then the forest will be beautiful; in the same way, to take care of a society, one needs to treat and take care of each patient, as each one is just as important and integral as the other.
