Family Medicine Residency, Military

To me, the most critical aspect of my future career as a physician is maintaining a sufficiently holistic view of medicine while avoiding too much compartmentalization. I see myself as a doctor who will be able to succeed by excelling at all aspects of patient care, whether it is the diagnosis, treatment, emotional care, or interacting with families. I see my compassion and diligence as my greatest strengths.

The skills, dedication, and close patient interaction required of a Family Practitioner at the front line of the medical care system are a perfect fit for my personality and career goals. I find the three degrees in Family Medicine, which consolidate knowledge, skill, and process, very appealing. Although knowledge and skill may be shared with other specialties, the family medicine process seems exclusive. At the core of this process is the patient-physician relationship in which the patient is viewed in the family context. It is the extent to which this relationship is valued, developed, nurtured, and maintained that I connect with the most.

Shortly after high school, I joined the army reserves. When it came time to select my military occupation, the obvious choice for me, based on my interests, was that of Combat Medic. Being on the frontline of military medical care, I could fulfill my passion for serving my country, as well as satisfy my desire to gain experience in the medical field. Experiencing the clinical and treatment sides of medicine hands-on gave me a taste of the functional part of the therapeutic process, which I had only witnessed so many times. My time as a combat medic helped solidify medicine as the focus of my life’s work. Although the critical care aspect of being a combat medic was exciting, I often felt that something was missing. After stabilizing the patient, they often left your care, and I wondered how their conditions progressed. The core values of family medicine filled this void, as I realized during my family practice rotation.

I found my clinical training at hospitals in XXXX more fascinating than my essential science years, especially during my Family Practice rotation. I am interested in an academically oriented residency program that will allow me to develop an ongoing relationship as a personal physician trained to provide first contact, continuous and comprehensive care.

I hope to enter a stimulating family residency program that will accommodate the necessary training required to work in either a private practice or teach in an academic hospital setting. I also wish for a friendly and supportive environment where the staff, faculty, and residents work together as a team. I seek a residency program not only to facilitate my future career in medicine but also would allow me to continue developing into the physician that I aspire to become. Eventually, I hope to specialize in one or more of the vast sub-specialties of Family Medicine. I am a team player, confident in my ability to interact well with my fellow residents and superiors. I am quick to learn new theories and techniques, and I eagerly await the challenges and responsibilities of a training program and a future in Family Medicine.
