Family Medicine Residency, Indian Applicant

In my homeland of India, we cherish our traditional close-knit familial bonds, and I feel fortunate to have grown up with all of my extended family members around me.  I will never forget the profound impact it had on our entire family, when one of my brothers-in-law fell ill with a rare form of brain tumor, namely, grade III anaplastic astrocytoma, and when my beloved aunt was diagnosed with leukemia.  While as a family, we overcame these hardships, they left their indelible mark on me.  I found myself dreaming of becoming a physician, studying and practicing medicine, and aiding others in their fight against diseases, achieving or maintaining good health.  Through hard work and determination, the medical school brought this to reality, the very same principles that will serve to fuel my success in a quality Neurology residency.

I feel strongly that my extensive experience in Neurology, along with my sensibilities and personality, and dedication, will help me to excel in your Family Medicine Program.  I feel that every day, I am constantly developing my own mind.  Sometimes I look at an object and imagine the signal going through nerve fibers in my mind to the occipital lobe or of the complex neuron relationships in my frontal lobe, motivating me to study and discover the world around me.  Despite the currently incurable nature of many neurological conditions, we still have many options to improve prognosis, decrease the frequency of relapses, and significantly reduce people’s suffering to the point of leading virtually symptom-free lives.

In anticipation and preparation for the challenge and opportunity of a Family Medicine residency, I have taken many steps in preparation for the rigors of living.  More specifically, I have been under the tutelage of Dr. XXXX, a highly accomplished family physician who has touched many patients’ hearts not only through her compassionate care but also through personal bonding.  Following Dr. XXXX’s example, I, too, aspire to a similar lifelong career in medicine that will balance clinical practice and research initiatives.  This combination of disciplines will allow me to maintain close interactions with patients, while simultaneously affording me the chance to contribute to the advancement of medicine.  To accomplish these career goals, I need a dynamic residency program that will challenge me to achieve my full professional potential, focusing on personal and professional development, through diverse clinical exposure and unique relationships with colleagues.

My international medical training has equipped me with a diverse skill set, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to participate in hands-on clinical experiences and scientific research activities.  Performing research in both India and the United States has strengthened my ability to work with multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals, as well as built my critical and analytical thinking skills.  Immigrating to the US has immersed me in arguably the best healthcare system on earth.  Hands-on clinical experiences in the US have provided me not just with an excellent chance for direct patient care, but have served as a bridge to a residency program. I have learned to approach patients with different social and religious backgrounds, constantly discussed with my supervising doctor interesting medical cases and diagnostic studies, reviewed related literature, interviewed patients, and performed and assisted with various diagnostic tests and procedures.

Additionally, I strive to maintain a balance in my life, complementing my ambitions with such hobbies as writing poetry and amateur photography. These diversions help relieve stress and channel my energy in positive ways.  Photography has also helped me develop a keen eye for detail and creative expression.  In addition, I also enjoy cooking and experimenting with a variety of different ethnic recipes.

As a candidate for residency, I am prepared to offer a multicultural perspective, a solid clinical skill set, as well as my personal attributes of hard work, determination, and perseverance to the program.  I am eager to learn all that I can in residency, while simultaneously contributing to a culture of excellence along with my colleagues.  With the skills and knowledge I will gain as a resident of family medicine, I look forward to positively impacting the lives of many patients.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
